Armpit Hair Removal

Conveniently located to serve the areas of San Antonio, TX

Removal of hair in your armpits using the FUE hair removal technique is a cutting edge treatment to stop both hair growth and excessive sweating in your armpits.  FUE hair removal involves using a small rotating punch to excise the hair follicles and the associated sweat glands.  Removing the hair follicles along with the hairs themselves ensures that these hairs will never grow in the future.  Additionally, removing the hair follicles removes the attached sweat glands along with the hair follicles, significantly decreasing the amount of sweat produced in your armpits.

About Armpit Hair Removal

When coarse hair grows in your armpits during puberty, large sweat glands called apocrine sweat glands develop along with the coarse hair.  These sweat glands secrete a thick, oily type of sweat which often has an associated odor.  Removal of these hair follicles and the associated apocrine sweat glands eliminates the need for shaving, significantly decreases armpit sweating and can significantly decrease body odor in your armpits.  Because the hair follicles and associated sweat glands are removed, these effects are permanent.

Benefits

The benefits of armpit hair removal include no need for shaving, significantly decreased sweating from your armpits, and decreased body odor from your armpits.

Candidates
Nearly everyone who would like decreased sweating or hair growth in their armpits is a candidate for armpit hair removal.  People who are not good candidates are those with associated medical conditions that may increase the risk of bleeding or infection or may impact normal healing.

Procedure

The procedure involves using an FUE machine which is typically used to harvest hair follicles from the donor area on the back of your scalp in hair transplantation surgery to instead remove the hair follicles from your armpits.  FUE machines use a spinning or oscillating cylindrical punch, typically just under 1mm in diameter, to remove hair follicles and the associated structures such as sweat glands and muscles.  The procedure requires that you not shave your armpits for at least 7 days prior to the procedure as the hairs have to be visible to be properly removed.  If the hair is too long at the time of the procedure it will be clipped to an appropriate length.  Next a local anesthetic will be injected into the skin to numb the entirety of your armpits.  Once your armpits are numb, fluid will be injected into the skin to stretch it out and tighten it, making the extraction of the hair follicles easier.  An FUE punch will then be used to remove all of the visible hairs along with their associated hair follicles and apocrine sweat glands.  Once all of the visible hairs have been removed, your armpits will be cleaned and bandaged.

Recovery

Because your hair follicles are being surgically removed, recovery is more prolonged than when undergoing alternative hair removal techniques such as laser hair removal.  The punch holes will close over several days to one week, with the pain gradually resolving over this time as well.  Typically the pain is mild to moderate and can be managed with Tylenol, ibuprofen, or a mild prescription pain medication such as tramadol.  Once the holes have closed, the punch sites will initially be a reddish color and then over a period of weeks to months as the sites continue healing the reddish color will fade back to your normal skin tone.  Once fully healed the puncture sites will be minimally noticeable if they are noticeable at all.

Results

The results of this hair removal technique are permanent and you will have significantly less sweating and body odor as well as no need for shaving after the hairs have been removed.  One thing to note is that all of the hairs on your body have a normal cycle including a resting phase where they do not grow at all.  Those resting hairs cannot be identified during the surgery so a small number of hairs that were in the resting phase during the procedure will begin to grow again in the future.  Future touch up procedures to remove those hairs that were in the resting phase during the initial procedure will be required and will be provided on a complimentary basis until all hairs have been removed.

Cost of Axillary Hair Removal

FAQ

Is surgical hair removal permanent?

Yes, because the hair follicles themselves will be removed there is no chance of the hair follicles regrowing hair at some point in the future.

Will I sweat less from my armpits?

Yes!  By removing the apocrine sweat glands that are attached to the hair follicles in your armpits, you will have significantly less sweating in your arm pits than you had prior to the procedure.

Will this help minimize body odor?

Yes!  Removal of the apocrine sweat glands attached to the hair follicles will both decrease sweating and decrease body odor as the sweat produced by apocrine sweat glands is one of the primary causes of body odor.
