About the Regenera Activa Treatment

Hair loss can occur due to various factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, and stress. Regenera Activa focuses on the philosophy of treating hair loss and enhancing scalp health through regenerative medicine technology. (1) Many people seek Regenera Activa for its ability to stimulate hair follicle regeneration, provide effective non-surgical hair restoration, and deliver noticeable results without major downtime or discomfort. Regenera Activa uses hair follicles taken from the donor area on the back of your head to create a solution of growth factors, regenerative cells, and progenitor cells from your own hair follicles that are specific to the hair and scalp.

This specialized approach is thought by some to provide an improved amount of hair follicle growth. (2) This specialized solution is a mixture of saline, autologous (from your own body) cells, and growth factors, so there is potentially less risk of rejection or allergic reaction. Regenera Activa treatment can be done alone or in conjunction with a hair transplant or other therapies.

Benefits

Regenera Active treatment offers numerous advantages that can help slow or stop hair loss before it progresses. Under Dr. O’Dea’s expertise, our patients might see potential benefits like:

  • Natural results: Since the treatment uses your own cells, it provides a natural enhancement to hair growth without introducing foreign substances into the body.
  • Minimally invasive: Treatment only requires three small punches of scalp tissue without other incisions or extensive surgery, leading to less discomfort and quicker recovery.
  • Quick procedure: Treatment generally takes about 1-2 hours, allowing for easy integration into one’s schedule.
  • Minimal downtime: Patients can return to their daily activities shortly after the procedure, typically within a few hours.
  • Improved scalp health: Beyond stimulating hair growth, it might help nourish and strengthen the scalp tissues, enhancing overall scalp health.
  • High safety profile: Using autologous material might decrease the chance of allergic reactions or rejection.

These benefits may vary and are not guaranteed.

Candidates

The best candidates for Regenera Activa are those early in the process of hair loss, as the goal of treatment is to reduce loss of the hairs that are susceptible to DHT (the hormone that causes hair loss) through the injection of the serum made from DHT-resistant hair follicles. (2) Regenera Activa treatment is appropriate for both male and female patients with hair thinning due to male or female pattern hair loss. Regenera Active therapy can be especially useful in young men with a family history of severe hair loss who want to minimize the amount of hair they will lose. (1) Regenera Activa is not considered effective in areas where the scalp is completely bald and smooth, or “skin-bald,” as the hair follicles in those spots have likely been permanently damaged or lost, making regeneration impossible. Additionally, Regenera Activa therapy is not appropriate for patients with hair loss due to burns, scars, autoimmune disorders, or infectious causes.

All prospective patients should be in good general health and have realistic expectations. A consultation with Dr. O’Dea is needed to officially determine candidacy.

Preparation

Preparation for Regenera Activa treatment is minimal. No pre-procedure medications need to be taken. Dr. O’Dea will help patients ensure that any existing medical conditions or medications will not interfere with the treatment. He also recommends that patients stay hydrated and maintain a balanced diet before their treatment.

Procedure

The Regenera Activa treatment is minor compared to a hair transplant surgery and can typically be done in around one to two hours. First, local anesthesia is administered to the back of the scalp. A small number of hair follicles are then harvested from the back of the scalp using a small punch. After harvest, the hair follicles are processed using the Regenera Activa system to create a solution containing growth factors, regenerative cells, and stem cells. The solution is then injected into the scalp at 1 cm intervals, targeting the same depth as the hair follicles across the treatment area. (2)

The hair follicles used to create the solution are taken from the donor area on the back of the scalp because they are often considered to be more resistant to DHT. By creating a solution of stem cells and growth factors using hair follicles from the donor area, these cells and growth factors might then migrate into the hair follicles in areas of hair loss and potentially apply their DHT resistance. This is thought to have the potential to help strengthen nearby follicles and slow their sensitivity to DHT over time.

Recovery

Recovery from Regenera Activa therapy is short. The donor sites close completely over 3-5 days, after which they will have a reddish color as they continue to heal over a few weeks. The redness at the donor sites will fade with time and will eventually return to your normal skin color. For the recipient area, the individual injection sites close within 1-2 days and heal completely within the first week. While recovery is not typically considered to be particularly lengthy, Dr. O’Dea does recommend that patients avoid any strenuous activities for a few days. Follow-up appointments with Dr. O’Dea will be scheduled to ensure that your scalp is accepting the treatment and to monitor your hair growth.

Results

Regenera Activa therapy has shown very promising results. Patients typically see an improvement in hair growth, where miniaturized hairs regain full caliber, throughout 3 to 6 months. Ongoing maintenance or repeat treatments could be necessary. Patients also report enhanced confidence from their fuller hair growth and appearance. Individual responses to treatment may vary, and ongoing evaluation is essential in tracking progress and determining additional treatments if necessary.

Results are not guaranteed and may vary.

Corresponding Procedures

Regenera Activa can be performed as a standalone treatment or alongside a hair transplant, both in areas where the transplant is being performed and in adjacent areas where further hair loss may be expected. Premier Hair Restoration practices two main types of hair transplant: the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method and the Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) method. In FUE, individual hair follicles are harvested and placed into areas of thinning. In FUT, long strips of hair are harvested and grafted onto areas of thinning. Combining Regenera Activa treatments with hair transplant procedures can help the body accept these transplants better and shorten overall healing times.
