How Regenera Activa Works for Early-Stage Hair Loss Treatment

Regenera Activa is a non-surgical treatment that uses autologous micrografting technology to enhance cell regeneration and hair growth.

Premiere Hair Restoration is one of the few practices that offer Regenera Activa for hair loss. We are led by Dr. Colin O’Dea, a leading hair restoration surgeon who has helped many patients achieve their goals with treatments that slow hair loss and encourage healthy hair regrowth. About Regenera Activa Treatment

Hair loss can occur due to various factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, and stress. During the early stages of hair loss, Regenera Activa can enhance scalp health through regenerative medicine technology. It works by harvesting a patient’s own progenitor cells from the back of the scalp and injecting them into thinning areas.

Hair follicles are complex and dynamic mini-organs that can regenerate throughout adult life. (1) Each hair follicle goes through the normal hair cycle, but at times, this cycle can experience disruption. The majority of hair follicles are in an active growth phase, the anagen phase—which lasts two to six years—during which the hair is dense and healthy.

The next phase is called the catagen; it is a very short transition phase lasting two to three weeks, when the hair stops growing and detaches from the blood supply.

Next is the telogen phase, where hair follicles are dormant for three to four months and later shed. Lastly, the exogen phase is when the active shedding phase occurs, where old hair strands are released from the hair follicles and fall out.

Common causes of dysregulation of the natural hair cycle are hormonal changes, severe stress, poor nutrition, or inflammation. This imbalance causes the hairs to become short, thin, or weak. Once the hair is lost, the follicle may not be strong or healthy enough to produce another hair, potentially resulting in a bald spot. This progressive decline is known as androgenetic alopecia. (2)

Many patients experiencing these symptoms seek Regenera Activa for its ability to stimulate hair follicle growth, help prevent future hair loss, provide effective non-surgical hair restoration, and deliver life-changing results with minimal downtime.

Benefits

Regenera Activa is a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure that treats hair loss by stimulating hair regrowth and slowing down hair loss in men and women. This procedure offers many transformative benefits, including:

  • Minimally invasive treatment
  • Safe, natural hair regrowth
  • Improved scalp health
  • Quick recovery and minimal downtime
  • Long-lasting effects and durable, strong hair growth

Candidates

If you are experiencing early signs of hair loss, such as thinning, pattern baldness, and existing dormant follicles, you may be an ideal candidate for this procedure. This treatment is also ideal for patients seeking a non-invasive procedure or who are not ready for a full hair transplant. Patients must also be in relatively good health and hold realistic expectations for their procedure. Patients with advanced hair loss or who have chronic autoimmune disorders or scalp infections may not be suitable candidates for this procedure and will possibly benefit more from a hair transplant instead.

Personal Consultation

During your personal consultation, Dr. O’Dea will examine your scalp and hair growth patterns and discuss your treatment goals. He will also evaluate your medical history, hereditary factors, and any previous hair restoration treatments. Dr. O’Dea will also explain the procedure in detail, highlight your expected outcomes, and discuss the possibility of combining other treatments—platelet-rich plasma or follicular unit extraction—for more impactful results.

Preparation

Preparing for your Regenera Activa hair loss treatment will ensure optimal results during and after your procedure. Dr. O’Dea may advise you to:

  • Avoid blood-thinning medications
  • Increase hydration levels
  • Cease alcohol and nicotine consumption before treatment
  • Stop using topical minoxidil (Rogaine) a week before treatment
  • Avoid sun damage and scalp treatments before treatment
  • Avoid using hair styling products like gels, oils, and sprays on the day of treatment

Procedure

Dr. O’Dea will begin your Regenera Activa treatment by administering local anesthesia to the back of the scalp. He will then harvest a couple of scalp tissue samples using a 4 mm punch tool. After harvesting the hair follicles, he will process them with the Regenera Activa system to create a solution of growth factors, regenerative cells, and stem cells. Dr. O’Dea administers this solution via injections into the scalp at 1-cm intervals, targeting the same depth as the hair follicles across the treatment area. This treatment lasts 1-2 hours, and it can be paired with others or be a standalone procedure.

The solution provides high concentrations of stem cells and growth factors that promote new blood cell formation and reduce inflammation in hair follicles. This process creates a healthy scalp environment while also stimulating new hair growth, helping you achieve a fuller, healthier head of hair over time and supporting the results of other procedures.

Recovery and Results

Recovery from Regenera Activa is minimal and lasts about three to four days. After your procedure, you may notice mild short-term tenderness, redness, or a headache, which is normal and will not significantly interrupt your daily routine. These symptoms will subside after three to four days, and you can return to full activity. You can also wash your hair 24 hours after treatment.

Your hair density and thickness will begin to improve after three to six months as the micrografts begin to stimulate the existing follicles. This procedure offers long-term improvements through regenerative cells and growth factors, facilitating new hair growth without surgical intervention. Results last up to 18 months, with the potential for more long-lasting improvement. Patients see the best long-term results with regular maintenance treatments.

Corresponding Procedures

FUE Hair Transplantation

Follicular unit extraction is a procedure that harvests individual hair follicles from a donor area (normally the back of the head) and transplants them to thinning or balding areas. Dr. O’Dea will use a circular punch tool to extract the hair follicles and place them into small incisions in the recipient area. This procedure best suits patients who are experiencing stable hair loss and have sufficient donor hair density.

FUT Hair Transplantation

Follicular unit transplantation is a procedure that harvests and transplants individual hair follicles by removing a thin strip of scalp from the donor area. Under the microscope, Dr. O’Dea will dissect the strip into individual grafts and transplant them into the balding areas. This procedure benefits patients who desire more extensive coverage after significant hair loss.
